Mizan - Womb and Abdominal Massage for Female Reproductive Health

  • Do you suffer from menstrual pain?
  • Is it difficult to have a smear test?
  • Are you struggling with fertility issues?
  • Do you have PCOS?
  • Do you have digestive problems, or IBS?
  • Are your menopausal symptoms embarrassing?
  • Have you had any abdominal surgery, including caesarean section?
  • Are you pregnant or just had a baby?

Mizan Therapy can help with any of these – and so much more!

With women possibly experiencing over 450 periods (that’s ten years or 3,500 days!) in their lifetime, some experiencing pregnancy and birthing from their womb space, and entering their third life phase in menopause, we are constantly bound by the health of our womb. A Happy balanced womb equals a Connected and Calm Woman!

What does Mizan mean?

Mizan, meaning “balance” in Arabic, uses traditional healing techniques to address conditions involving reproductive organs, the digestive system and emotional health. Muscles and ligaments that are over-contracted can cause pain and pull bones and organs out of place. Mizan Therapy is a gentle, external massage that strengthens supporting muscles and ligaments and aids internal organs to regain their correct positions for optimum health and well-being, bringing healing to women on both physical and emotional levels.

How can Mizan Therapy help women?

Mizan Therapy can help with the following issues:

  • Painful menstrual cycles
  • Heavy or scant periods
  • Irregular menstrual cycles and ovulation
  • Miscarriages
  • Endometriosis
  • Displaced or prolapsed uterus and/or bladder
  • Bladder or yeast infections
  • Digestive issues
  • Perimenopause, menopause symptoms
  • Fertility issues
  • Ovarian cysts and PCOS
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Pregnancy and postnatal health
  • Emotional and sexual trauma

Benefits of Mizan Therapy:

  • Mizan increases the circulation to reproductive organs, i.e., the uterus, the ovaries, and the fallopian tubes, which helps to promote hormonal balance.
  • It helps to reposition a misaligned uterus, which itself helps to increase circulation of blood, lymph, nervous system, and QI (energy).
  • Cleanses the body of any toxic build up from congested circulatory systems.
  • Helps to break down scar tissue
  • Aids the digestive system to be more efficient which then removes and prevents toxic build up in the body and enhances the immune system.
  • Helps women to connect with their womb space.

What is Mizan therapy?

Mizan is a massage therapy that focuses on the abdomen and the low and mid back. The massage helps to bring a fresh, oxygenated blood supply to the reproductive organs and surrounding tissues, the digestive system, and relieve tension, built up stress and stored emotions.

Mizan is an incredible therapy for women of all stages in life

Used by women for balancing their cycles, and bringing them to a regular interval, easing away the cause of PMT, painful cramps, and other unnecessary (common, but not normal) symptoms. So many women have a womb that is tilted (retroverted or anteverted) which is common but not normal, or out of balance physically, and this has a knock-on effect on so many of the body’s systems. Mizan helps to tone the surrounding tissues and ligaments, to help bring the womb back into its natural alignment.

Mizan is powerful during the reproductive years, as it helps to support natural and assisted conception. This therapy is marvellous for women in peri or post menopause too. Mizan also supports women who have experienced a pelvic organ prolapse.

Supporting your fertility with Mizan Therapy

Mizan Therapy supports your fertility on the journey to pregnancy and birth. Fertility depends on a series of processes working in the correct sequence and in conjunction with each other. Hormones must be released at the right time of the cycle, in the correct amounts; the uterine membrane must grow thick and healthy to nourish an ovum and the vaginal pH must allow the sperm through without being weakened by acidity.

If your womb is tilted, then it is more likely that there will be a disruption to the delicate balance of hormones and the body’s organs working in unison. This communication breakdown may be the cause of anovulatory cycles; premature menopause; PCOS or fibroids.

Sometimes the congestion caused by a tilted uterus can result in the blood stream becoming toxic, or too much strain on the lymphatic system to eliminate waste.

Mizan helps to realign the womb which will increase blood flow, nourishing and restoring your reproductive organs to health, improving detoxification, relieving congestion, and removing emotional blockages. This will give your body the best chance to conceive and nurture a growing baby. Since it takes 12 weeks for an egg to achieve maturity, it is best to undertake Mizan treatments for three months before trying to conceive.

Mizan is also beneficial for you if you are undergoing assisted conception and will improve your chance of a successful outcome.

How Mizan Therapy can help with Pregnancy Loss, Miscarriage and Termination

We tend to shy away from talking about loss and miscarriage; it’s hard to grieve and there are no rituals to ease our passage through. And with termination, which can be a very difficult choice, there may also be feelings of shame to add to the grief. Mizan can help to heal and rebalance: your womb, your hormones, your spirit. Whatever the circumstances, you will be treated with compassion by your Mizan practitioner. There is no right or wrong, no set length of time, so get in touch as soon as you feel ready.

Can Mizan Therapy help me during pregnancy?

Good for you, good for baby – Pregnancy

Many of the problems that we take for granted and accept as a normal part of being pregnant can be prevented. You don’t need to put up with pelvic girdle pain, pubic pain, tired aching legs, varicose veins, or swollen ankles; nor do you have to cope with sickness, headaches, or fluid retention. Mizan Therapy helps to relieve these and other complaints. Treating yourself to regular Mizan Therapy is relaxing and enjoyable for both you and the baby. Because it promotes circulation, the abdominal muscles are relaxed and strengthened, ready to birth your baby. It’s a great way to encourage your baby into the optimum position ready for birth, leading to a shorter labour and easier birth for you both.

Benefits of Mizan Therapy during pregnancy

  • Can help to resolve the symptoms of pelvic girdle pain and pubic pain
  • Relieves common discomforts of pregnancy such as indigestion, heartburn, nausea, low back ache, sciatica, pressure and burning sensation in groin area, constipation, headaches, leg discomfort including varicose veins, frequent urination, incontinence, and urinary tract infections
  • Encourages the baby and uterus into optimal positioning to facilitate pregnancy, labour, and birth (regular treatments can shorten the length of labour and birth, even for first time mums)
  • Tones, strengthens, and balances the uterus preparing for labour and birth
  • Synchronises mum and baby for birth
  • Supports mum and baby relationship by stimulating an increased release of oxytocin, fosters bonding and prepares the uterus and placenta for labour and birth
  • Increases circulation to mum and baby
  • Reduces tension and anxiety
  • Addresses emotional issues on a cellular level and sets healing in motion. In Primal Health, Michael Odent says that the baby’s immune system is developed in the womb and the hormonal reactions of the mother during pregnancy play a role in the health of the baby for the rest of his or her life.

Post-natal healing with Mizan Therapy

Having Mizan Therapy post birth is extremely beneficial in assisting the internal organs gently back to their optimum position and function. Depending on the birth, Mizan can usually be safely done before the 6-week check, afterwards in the case of caesarean section. Your Mizan Practitioner will guide you on this. If the birth was by caesarean section, Mizan will not only guide the uterus back into position but will also help in breaking down scar tissue and preventing the uterus adhering to other internal organs.

Mizan is known to make great shifts in a woman’s health and reconnecting with your womb is one of the most empowering things you could do for yourself as a woman.

How often is a Mizan recommended?

It completely depends on any symptoms and issues you have going on, or the reason that brings you for Mizan in the first place. Initially, I encourage you to begin with a series of three sessions so that we can continue supporting the body, womb, ligaments through the changes, as it finds its new status quo. Lots of women simply have a monthly/bi-monthly Mizan for ongoing self -care, because they want to look after that area of their body. The frequency does depend on the reasons for treatment though.

It is not recommended to perform the lower abdominal massage when you are days 1-4 of you menstruation or in early pregnancy. If you are trying for a baby, lower massage would not be recommended after ovulation. Alternatively, I offer warm hands to bring vitality and energy to this area.

If you are going through IVF, we can do Mizan up until embryo transfer, then we are hands-off. I am still there for emotional support though.

What to expect at your first Mizan appointment

You may have already filled in your health screen, and will go through it with your practitioner, or you may fill it in together, covering areas of your life including the physical, medical, emotional, spiritual aspects; past and present. What your menstrual cycle is like, your family history, and anything that is going on for you. Sometimes these questions may bring up things that you need to talk about, but often Mizan is a lovely way to shift emotional issues with minimum words. You can share as much or as little as you like.

What to wear for your Mizan Therapy appointment

Mizan is a very discrete massage. You will be mostly covered by a sheet, and blankets or towels.

For your lower body, it’s easier if you are just in pants, so that we don’t have to deal with the waistband of trousers or leggings. You will be covered over. But if you prefer to wear trousers, that’s ok too. Make sure they are loose, can be easily lowered, and you are not precious in case I get massage oil on them. On your upper body, you are fine with your bra on, and a top such as a t-shirt or vest is ideal. Something that can be easily brought up so that we can get to your upper abdomen and midway up your back. Again, you will be covered over for warmth, but please make sure that it is not something that will ruin if we get massage oil on it.

Socks! Unless you have a major sock aversion or you live in a very warm place, socks are good! Warm feet, happier womb!

What happens during a Mizan Therapy treatment?

Depending on your personal circumstances, Nina will talk through other self-care practices that may help you on your healing journey. This includes Caster Oil Packs, Vaginal Steaming, details about Faja use, the Mizan Botanicals that can be used, such as turmeric tinctures. You are encouraged to drink lots of water after your treatment.

It’s an hour for you to relax, focus on your breathing, meditate or visualise – whatever you feel comfortable with.

One aspect we do talk about in advance is what you are letting go of through this process.

We all have baggage whether it’s physical or emotional.

Mizan therapy is a gift that allows you to process emotions, trauma (big or small), and work with your body’s natural healing ability. After all, all our body is ever trying to do is heal. Once you’ve verbalised all of this, it’s amazing how much healing you can experience just in the first session.

The Mizan massage starts on the front of your body, palpating your lower abdomen to get a guide of how your womb is positioned, if there is more tension or tightness on one side or the other. This is on your lower abdomen, just above your pubic bone.

Some gentle lymphatic drainage on the front of the legs, pelvic alignment through gentle body rocking and deep breathing are all part of the first half of the treatment. Your skin is covered for most of this, apart from the tummy massage.

You will then turn over to lie face down. I always make sure you’re super comfy before working on the back. Your comfort is key for me. If you’re in the optimum position, I find I can leave you to relax for at least 10 minutes after the treatment because you’re in a deep state of relaxation by then.

The back work includes the sacral and the lower to mid back. These nerves all feed into the front of the body and help with encouraging the flow of fresh blood, vitality and healing to the reproductive organs.

Gentle body rocking, deep percussion and pressure points allow tension release and aim to balance the body systems.

Once the physical treatment is complete and you’ve had your additional 10 or 15 minutes of ‘snooze’ time, there’s normally another herbal tea waiting for you and we have a brief chat about aftercare.

I’ve always found that the end of a deeply relaxing and intensive treatment is not the best time to talk about homecare in detail. Most clients are in a different zone by this time, so we have a brief chat and then a follow-up when you are ready in a day or two.

What is the frequency between Mizan Therapy massages?

This will vary, and you can discuss this with Nina. It depends on what you are there for, and your own circumstances. Most clients come back weekly or fortnightly initially, but then move onto monthly. If all is well, maintenance every few months is always nice.

Any reasons why I can’t have a Mizan treatment?

Things to mention to Nina: Please do speak to Nina if there is a chance that you could be pregnant. The lower massage cannot be done if you are currently menstruating, so I will use warm hands to bring energy to this area in this instance. Mizan towards the end of a bleed is acceptable. Please speak to Nina if you have an active case of a fungal infection or external thrush.

What Mizan Therapy package do I need?

Because our needs are all different, I offer different packages:

Mizan Maintenance  is an hour-long treatment which includes a 15-minute consultation and a full 45-minute Mizan Massage. This is ideal for those of you who are wanting to experience the benefits of Mizan as a one-off treatment, and for those who have been doing in-depth work with me but are now further down the road and need an occasional boast to support their self-care. This is recommended monthly.

In-depth Mizan treatments are for women who are looking to work on more specific issues, be it physical or emotional. During your first 90-minute treatment, we have an in-depth consultation, where we go through your health profile, looking at what symptoms you are experiencing, any past or present health issues, your diet and lifestyle. Together, we will then create, for you, a bespoke self-care routine, I share with you the self-massage technique along with other tools, such as castor oil packing and vaginal steaming, to support you on your own healing journey. Your initial session lasts around 90 minutes which includes your 60-minute Mizan massage.

Subsequent in-depth sessions last 75 minutes.

I recommend three in-depth Mizan treatments to begin with, one week apart. Following this, if you feel balance is restored, you may continue with a monthly Mizan maintenance. Sometimes a further one to two in depth Mizan treatments are required fortnightly after the initial three treatments.

Pregnancy Mizan is a wonderful massage treatment, supporting you to deeply connect with your changing body and growing baby. Pregnancy can really take its toll on our bodies and women will experience unpleasant symptoms such as morning sickness, pelvic girdle pain, shortness of breath, constipation, haemorrhoids, and varicose veins. Mizan can bring relief to all these, as well as increasing circulation and blood flow to the womb, toning the muscle ready for labour, and to the placenta, carrying essential nutrients to your growing baby. The extra blood flow in the pelvis strengthens the ligaments and muscles supporting the womb, bringing her into alignment and optimising baby’s positioning. A deeply relaxing and beneficial 60-minute massage plus self-massage tuition.

Post-natal Mizan is one of those essential treatments for all new mothers. A deeply nourishing, mini spa massage package that relaxes and restores. It includes a choice of a mini–Indian head or mini-Reflexology, followed by a 60-minute in-depth Mizan massage. Guaranteed to make you feel whole again! This treatment is available any time after birth (or 6 weeks after in the case of a c-section birth), lasts around 90 minutes.

If you want to discuss the treatment further, then why not book for a clarity call with Nina HERE.
